On behalf of the NGO U-Cycle, Cedos is investigating how residents of frontline and de-occupied hromadas affected by the war, as well as those hosting IDPs, are using the bicycles received as part of the #BikesForUkraine humanitarian campaign. The campaign was launched in 2022 by six Ukrainian NGOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bicycles increase mobility in communities affected by the war, and thus strengthen connections between people, mutual support, and social responsibility. We distribute bicycles through organisations and institutions, so this mainly involves their shared use. Sharing and\/or repairing bicycles creates opportunities for interaction and builds trust between people.<\/em><\/p>\nSvitlana Samikova, coordinator of the international #BikesForUkraine campaign, U-Cycle<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The campaign aims to improve the mobility of volunteers and staff of critical public services, making humanitarian and other aid accessible to people. The donated bicycles also boost social cohesion and help Ukrainian communities remain resilient during the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\t

This research project is a collaboration between Cedos\u2019s analytical and urbanistic departments. It aims to understand how organisations and individuals are using the bicycles provided through the #BikesForUkraine initiative. In particular, to identify patterns of bicycle use and the changes this mode of transport brings for access to work, education, and other services within communities. It also aims to identify the barriers arising with bicycle use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results of this research will help us better support communities, engage #BikesForUkraine ambassadors abroad, and advocate for conditions that ensure safe cycling in Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\nMarina Bludsha, Communications Officer at U-Cycle<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As part of the project, we have carried out desk research and held focus group discussions with representatives of organisations that have received bicycles (local authorities, children\u2019s educational institutions, social welfare organisations, and civil society organisations). We also plan to conduct quantitative research and interviews with community residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
